I'm Thankful

by Chris Goers

I’m thankful for my hearth,
I’m thankful for my home;
I’m thankful for my family
Who ground me when I roam.

I’m thankful for each stitch of cloth
I wear upon my back;
I’m thankful ‘cuz I’m so aware
Of those who sorely lack.

I’m thankful for the food I eat
When some of us have none,
From a simple glass of water,
To a buttered, “Hot Cross” bun.

I hope that you are thankful too
As you read my simple verse,
For as bad as you may have it,
Some have got it worse.
I’ve heard you as you offer thanks,
You want for not a thing;
I’m sure that you appreciate
All you have received.

I’d like to pose a question,
A simple one for you,
When you say, “I’m very thankful.”
Thankful?
To whom?

Are you thankful fate has smiled on you,
Giving face to downright chance?
Are you thankful for a worldly god
Formed by human hands?

I hope we all would stop and hear,
Whether more or less in need,
A still and quiet voice inside
That brings us to our knees.

Be thankful there’s a God of love
No matter what we say or do;
The fount of blessing from above
Who gives good gifts to you.
If we, a wayward, selfish flock
Can still find ways to give;
Much more can we be thankful for
A God whose Son did give.

Hi Goers! Jacki Balfour here. I was going through our emails and came across the one with your page address. Thanks for the poem, Chris, I needed the reminder that 'some have got it worse' yesterday. Elianna was teething something fierce (fever, diarrhea, the whole works) and I hadn't had a lot of sleep and your poem made me realize that at least I don't have triplets, and at least i have access to Infant Motrin, and at least I have a mom close by to help me out, and at least I HAVE a bed to lay on, even if I don't get sleep. :) So thanks. And thank you Lord. We miss you guys a lot! Your kids are getting so big! And beautiful!! Give them big kisses for us! Love you lots, Jacki
